Beyond Resolutions: Sustain Your New Year Momentum In February
February can be a tough month. It's still cold and dark. New Year resolutions tend to slip around now. Those good intentions at the start of the month have lost momentum.
All those shiny new gym memberships have lost their gloss and according to surveys and fitness app data, many have given up as quickly as the third week in January.
How are you getting on with yours?
If you're still going or you want to pick up the pace, or just banish the February blues ... join the February Get Moving Challenge and keep the momentum going.
Spring is just around the corner and getting out on a daily basis (that was my January habit), you can see the changes happening, even in the last week. In my garden, Spring bulbs are coming up. Birds are establishing territories and scouting out nest boxes. Even in the bitter cold and wind I managed a brisk walk around the park.
Reflect On Your Achievements
Give yourself a pat on the back for what you've achieve in January. Now you've had a little time to get up and running, so to speak, where do you need to change or adjust? Identify any areas you need to improve or learn. Perhaps you've had a few more thoughts and ideas over the last month.
I know I have the attention span of a gnat these days, so I've been making use of a few apps to keep me focused and on track. I'll share more about these during the Challenge.
Set Your Goals For February
As ever, set your goals for the month. If you're building in a new habit, make it part of your daily routine. I have a couple of work habits to build on this month as well as the 'get moving' habits.
Make them part of your daily routine and set aside the time to make them happen.
Stay Connected And Accountable
Share your goals with family, friends or colleagues to keep motivated and offer encouragement and support.
This is the best thing to keep me going. And this time I've got my fitness buddy and my fitness tracker to help. Who have you got on side to support you?
You can also share your progress and challenges with regular check-ins in the Better Time Habits group.
Be Flexible
When it's a fitness or health related goal, it can be weather dependent, especially if you're not living in warm, sunny climes where you can exercise outdoors year round.
As I mentioned, if the weather is less than enticing, I'll adapt and do a brisk walk around my local park or if it's persistent rain, do an indoor workout. Try different activities to avoid getting bored, change the duration or try a new route or location. Get creative with what you can do and where!
