Are you being worked to death?

In the UK the average working week is 40 hours. We’re spending longer in the office, sitting at a desk and less active than a decade ago. Over 50% of people work more than 40 hour and 8% are working 60 hours or more.

People are under pressure, overloaded, more stressed. They have less time to focus on their health and wellbeing. They’re more at risk of stroke, heart attack and disease.

Japan doesn’t have a word for work/life balance but they do have a word for death by overwork – ‘karoshi’. Death that often results from suicide.

The The Lancet Online First, published an article comparing health risks of those working 55+ hours a week to those working 35-40 hours. Working longer hours was associated with a 13% increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease and a 33% increase in the risk of a stroke compared to a ‘normal’ work week.”
