Have a technology detox

Technology detox

Could you survive without your smartphone for more than 24hrs? Are you paying more attention to your smartphone than to the people around you?

Set sensible boundaries to manage your smartphone use:

  • Avoid using technology after a set time at night – let your mind switch off, ready for sleep.
  • Don’t take your smartphone to bed, leave it downstairs, away from temptation. If you need to check the time, get an alarm clock.
  • Not at mealtimes – applies to adults as much as teenagers and especially not if you’re out in company.
  • Not in meetings – unless it’s essential or you’re expecting an important call.
  • Switch off unnecessary alerts, notifications and sounds to reduce distractions and interruptions.
  • Switch to silent or switch it off completely every now and then for undisturbed time.

Finding it hard to resist? A recent update for the iPhone iOS now includes a setting to limit screen time.

  • Create a few hours downtime when certain apps are restricted.
  • Set App limits so you can’t while away endless hours playing CandyCrush or on Social Media.
  • Delete the apps you’re most tempted to use. You can always add them back. If they’re not there in the first place, you’re less tempted to distractedly click.
  • Google Family Link, Qustodio or Screen Time for android phones are aimed at managing your child’s phone but could work for parents too.

Who or what’s more important the screen in your hand or the person in front of you? Have a technology detox for a few hours a day or a couple of days a week.
