You don't need to be more organised ...
What makes your week go off track just when you thought you'd got it all planned out?
- An overflowing to-do list?
- Endless meetings?
- Too many tools/apps to keep track of?
- Other people's demands?
- ... all of the above.
Sometimes you don't need the latest shiny tool or app to be more organised and keep you focused and on track and being productive. You need a better way to plan your week in a way that works for you but doesn't burden you with something else to keep track of.
You probably need to focus on doing less, not more. Instead of trying to cram more and more into your week, in an attempt to be 'productive', you need less 'stuff' to manage in the first place.
I've been going through the process of organising and decluttering my house and it's not that I don't have a way to organise all my 'stuff' - believe me I do, I just simply have too much 'stuff' to organise.
Another organising system isn't going to make a difference. Trying to squeeze a king-size duvet into a shoebox isn't going to work. I have to clear out the clutter first, so it's easier to organise what's left and what's important.
In the same way - your week can quickly become chaotic and disorganised because you have too much clutter. Too many tasks, too many ideas, too many things you need to keep track of, you need to declutter and simplify first.
If you've only got 8 hours in your working day (give or take), or if you only want to work 3 days a week, how are you going to fit in all those tasks, meetings, projects, status updates and ad-hoc/urgent requests?
- What's really important?
- What do you realistically have time for?
- What do you need to let go?
When you have less to deal with, it's easier to plan. It's easier to prioritise and make decisions.
It also frees you up for the more important things in life. Something you enjoy and would rather be doing than spending another couple of hours working to clear all the things you didn't have time for this week.
